Hi, my name is Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), but my rescue family calls me Frankie. I was born October 3rd, 2014. My mom came into rescue while she was pregnant. My siblings and I were born in foster care. We received the best care - a safe, warm place to stay, with plenty of food, attention and love. We started our vaccinations at 6 weeks and were altered the end of December. When we were ready we were placed up for adoption. Everything seemed to be going according to plan. One day, while my rescue family was processing applications for us, they noticed something was wrong with my face. My cheeks seemed to have sunk in over night. My mom and my siblings all found forever homes, but I got put on hold. Even though I don't feel sick... I had to visit with several vets. They poked and prodded. Statements of "Muscular atrophy", "He's so young" and "I've not seen it in this breed before" filled my ears at each office visit. My family cried. I lick their faces every time to let them know I'm fine, but the vets say I'm sick and they believe them. One vet sent out blood work to California for a 2M test. It was to determine if I had Masticatory Muscle Myositis (MMM). It came back positive. It means I have lost muscle in my face. MMM typically happens in dogs at 3 years of age and in breeds such as shepherds and retrievers. I'm on a regime of medications and the vet thinks they got it early enough, that they might be able to save some muscle. I'm told I will be the rescues forever dog and I don't need to worry about finding a forever home. I'm hoping some kind friends will help my family with my vet bills or send me treats. |
